The Christmas Message

The Christmas Message

Pastor Jeff Christianson

The Lord told Isaiah that when Jesus is enthroned, He would be given royal names that reveal who He truly is. One of those names is Wonderful Counselor.

That name speaks of wonder. It points to something astonishing and beyond explanation. Jesus is not simply a counselor who offers good advice. He possesses wisdom that is higher than ours, deeper than ours, and far beyond human understanding.

“And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor” (Isaiah 9:6, NKJV).

If His kingdom is everlasting, then His rule must be sustained by perfect wisdom. Earthly kings may prolong their reign by making wise decisions, yet even the best of them must sometimes reconsider or correct their course. Jesus never does.

He is the infinitely wise and omniscient King. He knows all things. Every decision He makes is right. He never needs to revise a plan or undo a choice. Nothing surprises Him. Nothing escapes His knowledge.

He is called Wonderful Counselor because He rules with perfect knowledge and perfect wisdom.

This is comforting news at Christmas. The One who came in humility as a child is the same One who reigns in wisdom as King. And the counsel He gives is trustworthy, faithful, and sure.

We can rest our hearts in Him, knowing that the Savior who was born in Bethlehem rules forever, and He rules wisely.
